Frimley, UK, 2015-Mar-06
With National Apprenticeship Week (9-13 March) approaching, the tour focused around the £9million Siemens Training Centre, where apprentices are taught the skills necessary to begin careers in either the Wind Power or the Power and Gas service businesses.
The Training Centre is unique in its ability to deliver hands-on training on state-of-the-art machinery for growing industries, in a controlled and safe environment.
To date, 136 apprentices have graduated through the Training Centre, with the business units achieving 100% retention of the qualified apprentices. This intake of apprentices adds to the 14,000-strong UK workforce, with 1,200 employed in the North East making Siemens a leading local employer.
Leading the tour was Graham Hartley, Managing Director of Siemens Power Generation Services.
Graham said of the visit, “It’s been fantastic to have Julie Elliott visit us and to appreciate what we are doing here, both as a business and in the community. She is able to bring her keen understanding of energy and climate change and the challenges these present, together with her appreciation of the local community initiatives, such as STEM (science, technology, education and maths) and Primary Engineer – the Key Stage 1 and 2 programme to excite children about engineering and science, that we support.”
Also taking part in the tour, Mark Armstrong, Training Centre Manager Siemens Power Generation Services said, “While on site, Julie Elliott spoke with a number of the apprentices at the very beginning of their Siemens careers – starting out as apprentices just as I and many of the present senior management team did. One of our current apprentices, Lee Hunter, told her that “it’s the best thing I’ve ever done”, something that all of us that have gone from apprenticeships to management positions can agree with. What made it all the more pleasing was to have a local-born MP visiting our business, with our local managers and local apprentices.”
Siemens was established in the United Kingdom more than 170 years ago and now employs 13,760 people in the UK. As the world’s largest engineering company, Siemens provides innovative solutions to help tackle the world’s major challenges. Siemens has offices and factories throughout the UK, with its headquarters in Frimley, Surrey.
