Juergen Maier Chief Executive Siemens plc appointed to BIS Board

Business Secretary Vince Cable has announced the appointment of Juergen Maier as a Non-Executive Board member at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)

Non-executive board members are experts from outside government who assist in the delivery of policy using relevant experience from business.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: "I have been an admirer of Juergen Maier’s work as a leading supporter of manufacturing and apprenticeships. So I am delighted that he is joining BIS as a Non-Executive Member of our Departmental Board. Juergen's significant experience in manufacturing and business will be invaluable to BIS as we focus on supporting local growth, particularly in our innovative high-tech industries."

Juergen Maier has been a member of the Siemens UK Executive Management Board since October 2008, and has held a number of senior roles within Siemens in the UK and Germany including Industry Sector lead for the UK and Ireland and Manufacturing Director of the award winning Drives Factory in Congleton, Cheshire. Juergen was appointed Chief Executive at Siemens plc on 1st July 2014.

Juergen Maier said: "I am delighted to support BIS by joining the Board. The UK has a very real opportunity to grasp global leadership in the high-tech future of manufacturing but we urgently need to accelerate innovation and many more highly skilled engineers and software specialists to make this industrial revolution a reality. Juergen joins Allan Cook, Stephen Bligh, Ann Dowling, Dale Murray, Dalton Philips and Wendy Purcell.

Juergen Maier – Biography:

Juergen Maier was appointed Chief Executive of Siemens plc on 1 July 2014

Juergen has been a member of the Siemens UK Executive Management Board since October 2008, and has held a number of senior roles within Siemens in the UK and Germany including Industry Sector lead for the UK and Ireland, two Divisional Managing Director roles and Manufacturing Director of the award winning Drives Factory in Congleton, Cheshire.

Juergen joined Siemens in 1986 after obtaining a BSC in production engineering from Nottingham Trent University, on a Siemens sponsored graduate programme.

He was also made an honorary professor of Engineering at the University of Manchester in March 2014.

Juergen is passionate about the UK rebalancing its economy and supports a number of UK wide initiatives in support of Manufacturing and engineering skills including Board Membership of the Sector Skills council SEMTA and of the EEF (UK’s Manufacturers’ Organisation) and championing various Government initiatives such as UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapults. He also holds a Non Executive Director role for a SME manufacturing company called International Innovative Technologies based in Gateshead and is Chairman of the North West Business Leadership team and a board member of Greater Manchester LEP.

Born 1964 in Germany with Austrian nationality, he came to the UK in 1974.
