The hospital is one of Europe’s largest teaching hospitals, and the St. James's Institute of Oncology contains 10 floors dedicated to some of the best treatment for cancer patients available anywhere in the world. The new MAGNETOM Aera installation has joined two existing Siemens MRI systems at the hospital and replaced a legacy Siemens MRI setup. The new system is handling high-end dynamic imaging including breast procedures, biopsies and liver imaging.

The MAGNETOM Aera features an Open Bore design with a 70cm wide aperture and 145cm total length, allowing a wide variety of body types to be scanned. Patients can be scanned either feet or head first, significantly improving comfort for infants, claustrophobic and bariatric patients. The 48 channel system and lightweight coils provide users with the flexibility to personalise examinations for patients based on their condition and clinical indication. Workflow efficiency is improved through the use of Tim 4G and DOTTM technology, simplifying operation and allowing the acquisition of high quality images with shorter examination times.

"We selected the MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T because we were already familiar with Siemens’ imaging systems and trust their reliability," states Daina Dambitis, Principal Superintendent Radiographer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. "It is a very patient-friendly solution with its wide bore and MoodLight options; it makes for a softer atmosphere during examinations. Our team has found the Aera easy to get started with and use on a daily basis due to our long-standing relationship with Siemens and its products."

"We are very pleased that the staff at St. James’s Institute of Oncology have once again chosen a Siemens system to fulfil their imaging needs," states Philip Tesh, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. "The MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T is designed with patient comfort in mind and is versatile MRI solution that offers excellent imaging quality and rapid acquisition times. St James's University Hospital is a well-respected centre for high-tech patient care, teaching and research, and we are confident that the new system will prove a valuable addition to its strong imaging portfolio."
