The GB Rowing Team put in their best performance ever last weekend at the first World Cup in Linz, Austria, topping the points table with a haul of four golds, three silver and one bronze in Olympic-class boats.
Siemens-sponsored boats accounted for two of the golds, the three silvers and the bronze with exhilarating wins for Matt Wells and Steve Rowbotham in the double sculls and Matt Langridge and Colin Smith in the men’s pair, both taking gold.
Rowbotham said “Matt read the race really well – when we turned the screw we went for it”.
Silver medals were won by Alan Campbell in the single sculls racing against a world-class field, by Zac Purchase (world champion in 2006) and Mark Hunter and the day was rounded off nicely when the women’s eight won the third silver for the GB team.
David Tanner, GB Performance Director, said “In more than 30 years of involvement with British international rowing, this has been a unique day for me. This was an extremely good start to our season with some outstanding performances…especially given the quality of the field”.
