The future crop of top pathologists could come from Frimley after groups of local students from the area learnt more about the profession at a visit to the Siemens Academy Training and Education Centre at Sir William Siemens Square, Frimley on Tuesday.
To coincide with National Pathology Week 2nd – 8th November, students from Collingwood College and Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College visited the new training centre to learn more about pathology, the equipment used in blood testing and the role of pathologists in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
The students then followed the visit with a trip to Frimley Park Hospital, located just across the road from Siemens’ offices, where they were shown the equipment in situ and had the opportunity to speak with the pathologists about their job.
David Budd, Head of Marketing at Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Ltd said: “We were delighted to be able to open the new training centre at our Frimley HQ to students from the local area. Although the centre is primarily used for customer training, it was fantastic to demonstrate the equipment and share in experiences with the schools and colleges this week. We hope the visit was informative and may have inspired some pathologists of the future!”
The 700m2 facility, which opened in September, comprises seven fully equipped training suites, which can train up to 42 people at a time across the complete Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics product range. The comprehensive training courses that usually take place at the centre cover haematology, molecular testing, microbiology or point-of-care testing.
