United Kingdom, 2005-Oct-31

HRH the Duke of York is visiting Siemens’ superconducting magnet factory near Oxford today in his role as Special Representative for International Trade and Investment.

The Duke will tour the factory, meeting some of the 700 staff who design and manufacture superconducting magnets for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) medical scanners used around the world.

The business is one of the biggest employers in Oxfordshire. Production has increased by 40% and 200 new jobs have been created at the plant in the last year to meet demand for its world-leading products. A £10 million expansion has also recently been completed.

The business has won six Queens Awards since 1982, recognising its significant export growth and technological achievement. Siemens Magnet Technology exports 97 per cent of its systems. More than a third of MRI scanners installed in hospitals around the world have a superconducting magnet designed and manufactured in Eynsham at their core.
