House of Lords beats House of Commons on the Thames

For the first time since 2008, the House of Lords Parliamentary rowing crew emerged victorious in the Siemens-sponsored Parliamentary Boat Race held on the Thames today outside the Houses of Parliament.

This year, after three years of Lord’s being beaten by the younger Commons crew a British Rowing handicap start was instigated to make the race more competitive.

The Lord’s crew, stroked by Deputy High Court Judge Lord Thomas of Gresford OBE QC, amounts to an impressive 469 total years averaging 59 years per crew-member compared to the Commons boat with an average age of 49 years.

The event started in surprisingly dry weather conditions with an impressive row past by the Company of Watermen and Lightermen in a traditional shallop crewed by watermen in their scarlet uniforms.

London Youth Rowing, an inner London sports initiative encouraging young people to experience the sport of rowing raced first followed by Thames Rowing Club versus Vesta Rowing Club women’s race and London Rowing Club versus Molesey Boat Club Men’s race, the event culminated with the House of Lords versus House of Commons race.

As part of the event, Roland Aurich, the CEO of Siemens plc made donations to Paul Ludwig for The Royal Benevolent and Education Fund for Watermen and Lightermen, which provides financial assistance to apprentice watermen on the River Thames and to James Beeby, for the Stroke Association, which is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of strokes, the UK’s third biggest killer.
