Heathrow,UK, 2014-Feb-20
For the second year running, Siemens’ airport baggage division has succeeded at
the annual Heathrow Airport health and safety awards ceremony winning the
prestigious Leadership award and judged Highly Commended in both Project and
Team categories. The safety awards recognise the company’s outstanding
performance and project delivery at Heathrow’s Terminal 2 throughout 2013.
The awards ceremony was organised by Heathrow to recognise significant
achievement in safety within the work environment. The event was open to all
Contractors working on Development Projects across the airport campus.
The Leadership award was presented to Ciarán Creamer, Project Manager on
behalf of the Siemens team jointly by Heathrow Development Director, John
Holland-Kaye and Health and Safety Director David Pyle. Ciarán Creamer proudly
stated that all three awards clearly recognise the company’s consistent approach to
health and safety across Heathrow Airport that has enabled the team at Siemens to
deliver excellent levels of service and performance throughout 2013.
In 2013, Siemens demonstrated the successful delivery of the mechanical, electrical
and control systems for the new baggage handling system (BHS) at Heathrow’s new
Terminal 2.
A long term project, extensive technical works on all phases of the new baggage
handling operations by Siemens included the mechanical installation of 118 new
check-in desks, more than 1,500 single belt conveyor drives and lifting devices
extending over 5,000 metres, and a range of baggage sorting equipment from
vertical sorter units and hoists to a number of automatic tag reader scanners and
programme controllers. The operation covers 7,540 square metres and consists of
850 tonnes of fabricated steel.
Acknowledged for its work on such a landmark project for Heathrow, Siemens triumphed at the 2013 Airport Operators Association (AOA) Awards in November winning Best Service Provider for the second year running, and reached the final of the Best Innovator category. Siemens also reached the final of the Best Innovator category for introducing earlier in the year a ground-breaking new automatic baggage storage system for maximum airport efficiency and passenger convenience.
Overall, Siemens’ airport baggage division has achieved 1.56 million RIDDOR free hours during the last three years of Health and Safety, Environment and Quality, which is an outstanding achievement. Dr. Andrew Robinson, Managing Director of the business unit personally congratulated the team for reaching such a tremendous goal.
