Gwynt y Môr, which is located in Liverpool Bay, off the North Wales Coast, is the world's 2nd largest offshore wind farm and its 160 3.6MW wind turbines with an installed capacity of 576 megawatts will produce enough power to supply approximately 400,000 residential households with renewable electricity per year.
Four Siemens Divisions have collaborated in the success of this project for our customer RWE Innogy: Wind Power, Energy Management, Siemens Financial Services and Power Generation Services.
Energy Management has delivered both the onshore substation at St Asaph as well as two offshore substation platforms. In addition to supplying and commissioning the wind turbine array cable switchgear. Energy Management also delivered the overall electrical commissioning of the wind farm and the grid code compliance.
Power Generations Services (Wind Division) has a 12 year Service and Warranty contract at Gwynt y Môr for the turbines and directly employs about 60 people, most of them local, to support Operations and Maintenance activities.
Siemens Financial Services' trade finance organised over £250m of performance bonds from five banks in support of the project.
"Siemens has played a major role in this £2bn investment, which is set to supply around 400,000 homes in Wales with their energy needs," commented Michael Hannibal, the global CEO of Offshore Wind, "supplying turbines, sub-stations (including the onshore substation at St Asaph), financing and servicing via a 12-year Service and Warranty contract. It's been an excellent team effort."
Siemens was a funding partner for the wind farm alongside RWE and Stadtwerke München GmbH.
