Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes MP visits Siemens Mobility's Goole Rail Village

  • MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes visits the company’s state-of-the-art facility in East Yorkshire to hear about ongoing work to assemble new Piccadilly line trains and the development of battery bi-mode trains
  • Siemens Mobility has invested up to £240 million in the Goole Rail Village, a train manufacturing facility, components facility, logistics centre, bogie assembly and service centre. The site has brought 1,000 jobs to the local area alongside 1,700 across the supply chain
  • If battery bi-mode trains were rolled out across just seven UK operational networks, Britain’s railways could save £3.5 billion over 35 years compared with using diesel-battery-electric tri-mode trains

Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, recently visited the Siemens Mobility Rail Village in Goole to hear from constituents who work at the site. She was given a tour of the state-of-the-art facility by employees to hear about their work assembling new trains, including for Transport for London.

The Goole Rail Village has brought significant investment to the surrounding area. The Goole site represents an investment of up to £240 million, comprising of a train manufacturing facility, components facility, logistics centre, bogie assembly and service centre.

This investment will bring up to 1,000 new jobs to East Riding of Yorkshire, as well as around 1,700 supply chain opportunities, promoting localisation and helping to serve other global markets by 2030.

Siemens Mobility employees showed Melanie the production line for the new Piccadilly line trains, which will begin operating in the second half of 2026. They also spoke about the opportunity to work on a new fleet of rolling stock that utilises battery bi-mode technology. This is a much quicker and cheaper way to replace diesels on routes that can’t be electrified any time soon.

All future Siemens Mobility UK rolling stock orders will be built at Goole, including the new Desiro Verve battery bi-mode trains which the company has calculated could save Britain’s railways £3.5 billion and 12 million tonnes of CO2 over 35 years.

Siemens Mobility also operates a light maintenance depot in Cleethorpes, supporting a further eight jobs in the region. The depot was built in 2006, with the land split into two parts that includes depot facilities for trains to be stabled overnight for cleaning, refuelling and preparing for service. This facility extends Siemens Mobility’s regional footprint and underscores the commitment to the UK economy.

Melanie Onn, Member of Parliament for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, said following the visit:

“I had the privilege of visiting the Siemens Mobility factory in Goole recently. I was impressed by the significant investment made here and the profound economic benefits it brings to the North of England, particularly for my constituents in Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

“It was a real highlight to meet and speak with many of the dedicated employees who build these cutting-edge trains. Their passion and expertise truly underscore the importance of this site as a hub for advanced manufacturing and engineering talent in our region. I'm very grateful to them for kindly showing me around the factory.

“We also discussed the future, especially the potential for the factory to produce innovative battery bi-mode trains. I'm really excited by the opportunity for these trains that herald the future of train manufacturing in the UK to be produced here in the Humber region.

“I look forward to hearing more about the progress being made at the Goole Rail Village given its strategic importance to our region and to the UK's manufacturing future.”

Niraj Sondhi, Siemens Mobility Commercial Director at the Goole Rail Village, said:

“Siemens Mobility has a proud history and exciting future in the United Kingdom, with our mission to transform rail travel and transport for Britain.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work we’re doing here in Goole to support the region’s growth and innovation, and it was great to share our progress with Melanie.”
