First cohort of graduate engineers from pioneering Engineering School in Lincoln

The first cohort of graduates from the University of Lincoln’s pioneering new School of Engineering will collect their degree certificates today (Tuesday, 3 September). The Lincoln School of Engineering was the first dedicated facility of its kind to becreated in the UK for more than 20 years, built in collaboration with the global engineering company Siemens.

The University of Lincoln is one of just five universities in the country to hold ‘principal partner’ status with Siemens. The collaboration with Siemens has been recognised with the Times Higher Education award for Outstanding Employer Engagement, and this year will see nine out of ten Mechanical Engineering graduates go on to employment with the company, as they join the renowned Siemens Graduate scheme.

Graduates will attend a ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral and a subsequent exclusive reception to celebrate their success. Dr David Waugh, Senior Lecturer at the Lincoln School of Engineering, said: “The graduation of our first ever University of Lincoln Mechanical Engineering cohort is testament to the hard work of all those that have been involved with the Lincoln School of Engineering over the past four years. With the invaluable input from industry to develop our course here our students will now, after three years of hard study, be adequately prepared for the world of industry.”Steve Middlebrough, Director of Service Engineering at Siemens in Lincoln said:

The £7m School of Engineering, which opened in 2009, provides specialist courses in industrial power and energy, designed to meet the needs of the future of engineering enterprise and innovation. The ground-breaking initiative ensures that graduates are ‘industry-ready’ and able to immediately contribute when they enter theworkplace, having experienced unique links with the region’s industry. The University of Lincoln Graduation ceremonies will take place at Lincoln Cathedral from 2 - 5 September 2013. The ten ceremonies will be attended by over 14,000 people and will see 3,000 students graduate from the University. The students will be joined by a number of famous faces, who have been invited to accept honorary degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their given fields. This year’s honorary graduates include award-winning journalist John Sergeant, former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Blair, Chief Executive of the British Library Roly Keating and Graham Secker, Pro Chancellor at the University of Lincoln.
