E.ON UK enhances data security with Siemens identity management solution

United Kingdom, 2005-Mar-08

Siemens Communications has announced that it has been selected by E.ON UK, the company that runs Powergen, to design and supply an identity and access management solution.

This will provide the company with enhanced levels of security, integrity of data and the ability to prove regulatory compliance, along with cost savings brought about by the elimination of data duplication.

The solution, which uses Siemens’ industry leading HiPath DirX directory server, will give E.ON UK improved password management capabilities and an automated process for the creation and deletion of employee access.

This technology establishes a unique, effectively managed identity for each individual by synchronising the users’ identities across disparate systems within the organisation, eliminating the need for multiple passwords.

“We selected Siemens based on a number of criteria: its ability to supply end-to-end management of our requirements; the team’s understanding of our business; and its success in similar deployments,” explains David Hannaford, IS Project Manager at E.ON UK.

“By having a single controlled identity for each of our employees and using the tools provided by the system, we should be able to securely automate many of the functions associated with password resets and IT account provisioning for starters, movers and leavers.

"This should significantly reduce the effort needed by our Helpdesk administrators in carrying out these tasks. Updates to this identity information will then be automatically synchronised across the different target systems,” concludes David.

This approach ensures that improvements in data integrity, accuracy and consistency are driven across the entire organisation, as security and legitimate access to data is controlled centrally.

“The solution that we are deploying will increase data security by ensuring only legitimate people have access to information”, explains Craig Pollard, Head of Security Products and Services, Siemens Communications.

“Our ID Management solution not only simplifies high volume business processes such as starters, movers and leavers, but also eases the implementation of new systems and business change – key considerations for any organisation looking to achieve operational efficiencies.”

This contract builds on Siemens’ existing relationship with E.ON UK to deliver voice infrastructure and applications, and it underpins Siemens’ ability to deliver complex data solutions.
