Building on the global success of the current Desiro, and following a €50 million investment and development programme that has taken over two years, the Desiro City is an evolutionary model that takes flexibility, passenger safety and comfort to new levels. The UK is the first country in the world to have access to the new train which offers significantly lower operational costs than current models.
Key features include:
- A single car concept – a highly flexible and modular design with a combination of motor and trailer cars for tailored performance levels
- Significantly reduced train weight – weight optimised equipment and an aluminium bodyshell results in a train that is 25% lighter than current UK fleets
- Ultra modern flexible and modular interior design – allows multiple interior configurations for enhanced passenger comfort and maximum passenger capacity
- Energy efficient and environmentally friendly – an advanced driver advisory system, improved aerodynamics, an intelligent air conditioning system and intelligent stabling modes and are just some of the highlights. Together, the Desiro City’s reduced weight and environmental features enable primary energy consumption reductions of up to 50%
- High capacity solution whilst ensuring track friendliness – lightweight bogie design with inboard bearing concept and optimal wheelbase result in significantly less track wear
- Designed with maintainability in mind - the train design incorporates extensive maintenance and servicing improvements and innovations based on the expertise and lessons learned from the current Desiro UK

Siemens has an enviable track record of developing, and delivering, efficient rail solutions that work ‘out of the box’ on the UK rail network as all trains are fully tested on the company’s unique test track in Wildenrath, Germany, prior to entry in the UK. This minimises disruption on the UK rail network.
Most recently the company has received significant orders from London Midland (37 x Desiro Class 350/2), the first of which was delivered on time just 55 days after entering the UK and just 16 months after order placement, with the final train scheduled for delivery at the end of this month, and ScotRail (38 x Desiro Class 380), due for initial passenger service in Autumn 2010.
