Glasgow, 2009-Apr-21
On 8th May 2009, on behalf of train operator ScotRail and Transport Scotland, Siemens plc will start work to redevelop the existing Shields train depot located between St Andrews Drive and the mainline railway line to the west of Glasgow city centre.
This is an exciting project that will considerably improve the appearance of the existing depot and surrounding area, it will also generate local employment. In addition to the construction work, which involves local firms, the project will lead to about 130 jobs in Scotland to operate and maintain the new fleet and expanded depot facilities. When completed, the facility will be used to maintain 38 new state-of-the-art Siemens electric trains, as well as some of the existing ScotRail fleet. The new trains will operate on Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire services, bringing much needed extra capacity to these routes and improving the rail passenger service.
Eddie Inglis, Siemens Mobility business development manager, Scotland said:"We're delighted that ScotRail has chosen Siemens to deliver the new, state-of-the-art depot facilities. A key consideration when constructing the new depot is to minimise any environmental impact and maximise energy efficiency with innovative lighting and building materials. The depot enhancements servicing the new Siemens 380 trains will go a long way towards guaranteeing the very high levels of service that our customers and the travelling public expect."
All work on site will be governed by the Considerate Constructor Scheme to ensure that the impact on local residents is kept to a minimum. The site will be kept clean and in good order and construction operations will be carried out under strict health and safety rules. It will also have 24 hour security.
