Celebrating 30 years of manufacturing in Oxford

Staff and visitors celebrated 30 years of manufacturing at Siemens Magnet Technology, based in Eynsham, Oxford, on Wednesday, 20 June.

Oxford, 2012-Jun-20

Past and present Siemens employees at the event.

Siemens Magnet Technology designs and manufactures superconducting magnets for medical scanners used around the world. More than a third of all MRI scanners installed in hospitals around the world have at their heart a superconducting magnet designed and manufactured by SMT in Eynsham, Oxford.

Previously the factory was the home of Oxford Instruments and the celebrations marked 30 years of MRI magnet development and manufacturing in Oxford. The occasion was marked with a presentation of achievements throughout the years and a commemorative lunch with representatives from Oxford Instruments alongside past and present Siemens employees.

The commemorative event rounded off a day of celebrations following a presentation in the morning of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation 2012 by The Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Mr Tim Stevenson.

Craig Marshall, Managing Director at Siemens Magnet Technology, said: “I am filled with a sense of pride for what we have achieved over the years of manufacturing in Oxford. From the beginning we have always strived for excellence and innovation. We are proud to be a UK manufacturer, playing a vital role to help rebalance the UK ecomony. Throughout the 30 years we have always engaged with the local community in a variety of ways. For example by benefiting from being close to Oxford University and tapping into a local skill base and supply chain and also by supporting local charities. Celebrating the manufacturing successes of the last 30 years provides further commitment to the importance of manufacturing in Oxford.”

In addition to its technological excellence, Siemens Magnet Technology is also recognised as a world leader for its process innovation and acts as a UK centre of excellence. This excellence notably resulted in the Best Factory Awards in 2010.
