“This is a significant milestone for Cobalt, as we expand our important work in medical diagnostic imaging,” states Peter Sharpe, CEO of Cobalt. “Through our close partnership with Siemens Healthcare, we are now in a position to considerably heighten both our clinical research and diagnostic capabilities. The addition of our new PET-CT scanner will enable us to provide a critical service to patients in a wide geographical area.”
Siemens Healthcare’s Biograph mCT Flow Edge is the world’s first PET-CT system to eliminate the demand for stop-and-go imaging, with planning and scanning based on a single continuous motion of the patient table. By utilising this new advancement in medical technology, clinicians at Cobalt Imaging Centre will benefit from excellent image resolution in virtually every organ and every scan, helping to further understand key diseases.
Peter Sharpe adds, “Cobalt provides the PET-CT service for a population of over 2 million, scanning over 2,900 patients each year. Thanks to the significant reduction in scanning times with the Biograph mCT Flow Edge we shall be able to see more patients on a daily basis, allowing us to operate more efficiently and effectively. The new scanner also enables us to reduce the patient radiation dose, with the open architecture improving the patient experience. This technology will enable Cobalt to develop exciting research opportunities.”
The PET-CT scanner was officially unveiled at a launch ceremony at Linton House, attended by staff from both Cobalt and Siemens Healthcare. Darren Parker, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare, commented, “Through the elimination of a stop-and-go approach typically associated with PET-CT, the Biograph mCT Flow Edge paves the way for extraordinary progress in diagnosing and treating the highly challenging diseases of dementia and cancer. We will continue to work in close partnership with Cobalt to support its ground-breaking research and diagnosis capabilities.”
Cobalt has been a leading provider of advanced medical imaging services to the NHS since 1994, including MRI and PET/CT. The Charity also provides training and education to healthcare professionals and participates in research on a national and international basis.
