Between two cities Siemens wins new wind turbine order in Scotland

Siemens has been awarded a new turbine supply and service order for the Torrance wind farm, located between Scotland’s two main cities – Edinburgh and Glasgow. The order is the latest achievement for Siemens’ innovative and highly-efficient direct drive gearless technology, which generates around 30% more energy than equivalent geared wind turbines.

Wishaw, 2012-Nov-22

The new wind farm is being managed by FIM Services Ltd, a specialist provider of investment products and services in areas of sustainable forestry and renewable energy in the UK. Siemens will supply, install and service 3 SWT-3.0-101 direct drive turbines for the Torrance wind farm, located at the Harthill Services on the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The new farm is located close to Siemens Service operation at Wishaw. Siemens will also provide a fifteen-year Long Term Programme (LTP) service contract.

Christopher Shead, renewable investment director at FIM services said "Torrance wind farm is FIM’s second wind farm with Siemens. The acquisition adds to FIM’s current portfolio of six UK onshore wind farms, taking our overall generating capacity to 61MWs. FIM is also pleased to contribute to the Scottish governments focus on renewable energy."

Nick Ward, head of sales for Siemens Wind Power said: "We are delighted to be working with FIM Services on this new project. Siemens is already making a significant contribution to helping Scotland achieve its low carbon vision with its technologies contributing to over 1.7GW of onshore wind energy generation. Last year, we successfully introduced our direct drive technology into Scotland, which is already exporting energy to the National Grid and has been a great success.

The Torrance wind farm project will continue this trend and deliver many benefits to the local community through green energy generation and the creation of long-term local employment opportunities."

The wind farm is targeted for completion by September 2013.
