Nick Muntz points out to Prime Minister David Cameron key elements of a gas turbine

The Prime Minister enjoyed an informal lunch in the staff canteen with several generations of Siemens apprentices – helping to highlight the ongoing importance of apprenticeships for a modern engineering business.

Commenting on the visit, the Prime Minister, David Cameron said:

“It is great to be here at Siemens in Lincoln. I believe the economy is on the mend and it is businesses like yours that design, make and export who are helping Great Britain compete and succeed.”

Employees have the opportunity to pose questions to PM David Cameron as part of a Q&A session

David Lewis, head of manufacturing at Siemens gas turbine plant said:

“It was great to see the Prime Minister visiting our site and to have the opportunity to raise some of the issues that employees feel are important to themselves and their families, the business and local community. We have worked hard to create a successful business and a large part of this is down to our employees as well as the decisions we have made to invest in our infrastructure and skills and training.”

Siemens was selected to host today’s visit as one of the leading engineering employers in the region. Siemens business in Lincoln employs around 1,500 local people, 800 of which are based at the gas turbine manufacturing site, which hosted today’s visit. Siemens plays an important role in Lincoln’s economy and local community. Over the last three years, Siemens has invested significantly in its infrastructure, both in the historical Ruston Works facility in the centre of Lincoln, as well as a brand new state-of-the-art gas turbine service centre at Teal Park, opened earlier this year. Siemens is also a major investor in skills and training, including a long standing and much-prized apprenticeship programme, support of the new Lincoln University Technical College and its innovative collaboration with the University of Lincoln to establish the new purpose built school of engineering.

"We welcome the Prime Minister’s visit to Lincoln, which has given our employees the opportunity to raise some key issues relating to the economy, growth and skills. All of these are important to engineering businesses such as Siemens.

As a major engineering and manufacturing business in the UK we are proud of our heritage in supporting innovation and our role in nurturing engineering talent. It is of course a boost for us to be acknowledged for the role we play, as well as the work we do collaboratively with many other organisations across the region.”
