This month, Siemens Mobility and Network Rail marked a major milestone in the programme to upgrade 11,700 cab radios to the latest version, V4.0, with the 10,000th radio upgrade having been successfully completed.
Rob Morris, Managing Director, Rail Infrastructure for Siemens Mobility, said: “Achieving this significant programme milestone is a reflection of the collaborative and constructive partnership between Siemens Mobility, Network Rail and Yunex Traffic, our manufacturing partners in Poole.
“Despite the extraordinary challenges that we have all faced over the last two years, the whole project team has worked tirelessly and is now completely focused on delivering the final 1,700 upgrades.
Manufactured in Britain, the radios are used to allow signallers and train staff to communicate to each other safely and efficiently.
The upgrade not only provide train operators with improved interference resistance and connection to the 3G/4G data network, but also unlocks the opportunity for operators to enable a number of smart applications, including train borne condition monitoring (TBCM) and connected-driver advisory service (C-DAS), both of which are designed to improve the passenger experience and operational efficiency.
